This is an intriguing stone from the Mulga field in Australia. It came from a parcel of material we acquired years ago. This was the standout piece from the lot. While it’s opal, its charm comes from the varied colors of potch, or common opal, with striking cream-to-black areas. The cream portions have flashes of green and blue, even on the back, which we polished—though the polish there isn’t perfect. The edge is beveled with some superficial pitting, visible in the photo of the back reflecting light. The front is nearly flawless, with just a couple of small pits. It weighs 25.1 carats and measures 39.5 x 22.3 x 4.4 mm thick.
